“WELL HI EVERYONE AND WELCOME TO ANOTHER SPEDEWORTH INTERNATIONAL PRESENTATION OF SMALL OVAL MOTORSPORT”,

THOSE IMMORTAL WORDS SPOKEN BY THE LEGENDARY JOHN EARREY AT FOXHALL STADIUM IPSWICH, ON WHITSUN BANK HOLIDAY 1969 WERE MY INITIATION TO A LIFETIMES PASSION WITH OVAL RACING AND IN PARTICULAR THE SUPERSTOX FORMULA.

I WAS FOUR YEARS OLD THEN, I AM NOW FORTY NINE YET THE PASSION HAS NEVER WANED.

THE FORMULAS ON THAT SUNNY DAY WERE SUPERSTOX, STOCK CARS AND HOT RODS, QUITE A FEAST IN TODAY'S TERMS, BUT PRETTY MUCH THE NORM WAY BACK THEN! SUFFICE TO SAY THE WHOLE SPECTACLE AMAZED ME, BUT IT WAS THE SUPERSTOX THAT REALLY CAUGHT MY EYE. I GUESS IT MAY HAVE BEEN BECAUSE THEY LOOKED LIKE AN AUTOMOBILE I HAD NEVER SEEN BEFORE – IF YOU THINK ABOUT IT, THERE APPEARANCE IS RATHER UNIQUE.

LIKE MOST SUPERSTOX FANS, SOME OF THE APPEAL WAS TRYING TO IDENTIFY THE ORIGINS OF THE CUT N SHUT BODIES, MIXED WITH THE LOVELY CACKLE OF AN UNSILENCED B SERIES ENGINE AND THE FACT THAT THE DRIVERS SEEMED TO ME, TO BE FEARLESS! MAYBE BECAUSE THEY HAD LESS ‘TIN’ AROUND THEM

NONETHELESS, I BECAME SMITTEN WITH THE CARS – AND STILL AM TODAY.

MY FIRST CLEAR MEMORIES RELATE TO 1971 AND THE SPEDEWEEKEND FEATURING THE SUPERSTOX EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP. THE SUPERSTOX FORMATTED THE ORIGINS OF THE EARLY SPEDEWEEKEND' S AND THIS WAS A ‘BIGGIE’ WITH NO EXCEPTION! MR ACKER BILK AND HIS BAND ENTERTAINED FREQUENTLY THROUGHOUT THE WEEKEND AS PART OF A FEAST OF ENTERTAINMENT INCLUDING DRAGSTERS, ONE OF WHICH HIT THE OLD ARMCO!

FROM THIS MEETING, TWO DRIVERS CAUGHT MY ATTENTION, 790 DAVE KERSHAW AND 320 DAVE PIERCE.

FROM THAT MOMENT, I SUPPORTED DAVE KERSHAW IN FOXHALL FOXES AUTOSPEDEWAY EVENTS AND LOCAL SUPERSTOX MEETINGS. BY 1972, AUTOSPEDEWAY HAD FINISHED, MR KERSHAW WAS TAKING A BREAK FROM RACING AND THEREFORE IT WAS THE BP/CUSTOM CAR MAGAZINE SPONSORED CAR OF DAVE PIERCE WHICH GAINED MY FULL ATTENTION.

AS THE YEARS ROLLED ON, AS A FAMILY WE SUPPORTED DAVE PIERCE AND SUPERSTOX RACING WHENEVER POSSIBLE, TRAVELING FOR THE BIG CHAMPIONSHIPS AND NEVER MISSING A FOXHALL MEETING.

AT THE AGE OF EIGHTEEN, I WANTED TO BECOME MORE INVOLVED IN RACING AND BECAME A MECHANIC FOR IPSWICH SUPERSTOX DRIVER IAN CAMPBELL 31. I COULD WRITE A WHOLE BOOK ON THOSE FANTASTIC EXPLOITS ALONE! FAST FORWARD ONE YEAR AND I HAD BECOME SPEDEWORTH' S EAST ANGLIAN START MARSHALL, A POST I HELD FOR FOUR YEARS BEFORE HAVING A GO AT RACING MYSELF WITH A BUDGET STOCK ROD OF ALL THINGS!

BY THIS TIME, DAVE PIERCE HAD RETIRED FROM RACING AND I GAVE UP THE STOCK ROD VENTURE BECAUSE MY HEART WAS NOT REALLY IN IT. IN HINDSIGHT I WISH I HAD GONE INTO SUPERSTOX, BUT I WAS SO IN AWE OF THE DRIVERS AND HOW COMPETITIVE THE RACING WAS, I COULD NOT SEE THAT I COULD MAKE ANY IMPACT OTHER THAN THE CRASH TYPE OF IMPACT!

THIS VIEWPOINT ALWAYS REMAINED WITH ME SO MUCH THAT SOME YEARS LATER, TEMPTED TO RACE AGAIN, I TRIED MY HAND AT BRISCA F2 THINKING NO ONE WOULD KNOW ME. LIVING IN IPSWICH AND RACING FOR BRISCA MEANT I QUICKLY BECAME ‘CANNON FODDER’ AND MY TWO SEASON SPELL IN F2 WAS SPENT BUILDING AND REPAIRING CARS UNTIL COMMONSENSE PREVAILED AND I BOUGHT A HOUSE INSTEAD.

BY NOW A HOUSE OWNER, MARRIED AND A FATHER, THERE WAS ONLY ONE THING LEFT……..GO RACING! THIS TIME WITH THE ORIGINAL STOCKKARTS FORMULA WHERE I WAS ABLE AT LAST TO FULFILL MY RACING AMBITIONS AND TO SOME SUCCESS! WE TRAVELED TO ALL THE PREMIER UK STADIUMS WITH THIS FORMULA AND I HAD SEVERAL WINS AND TOP THREE PLACES INCLUDING A POINTS TITLE. MY PROUDEST MOMENTS OF ALL THOUGH WERE RACING AT MY HOME TRACK IPSWICH DURING SPEDEWEEKEND 2004 AND TAKING A FINAL THERE IN 2006. ALL THIS RACING UNDER THE FAMOUS 320 RACE NUMBER I HASTEN TO ADD.

IN RECENT TIMES, ALTHOUGH NO LONGER RACING, I PRODUCED A PICTORIAL MAGAZINE WITH DAVE ‘GRAPHICS’ BALDWIN CALLED “STOCK CAR RACING IS MAGIC” WHICH FEATURED THE 1970’S PHOTOGRAPHIC COLLECTION OF THE LATE FRED BUSS, WHICH IS ONE OF MY MOST TREASURED POSSESSIONS. THE PROFITS OF THIS MAGAZINE WERE DONATED TO CANCER RESEARCH UK IN FRED’S MEMORY AT SPEDEWEEKEND 2012.

SPEDEWORTH SUPERSTOX IN THE MODERN ERA IS WELL SUPPORTED BY THE SPORTS MEDIA AND IN PARTICULAR BY OUR GOOD FRIENDS AT WWW.SUPERSTOX.CO.UK AND THE SPEDEWORTH SUPERSTOX FACEBOOK PAGE.

SO ONTO “OLD SKOOL SUPERSTOX”, WELL THE IDEA HAD BEEN BOUNCED AROUND A FEW YEARS, MAINLY BY MOTORSPORT JOURNALIST AND TV COMMENTATOR, RICHARD JOHN NEAL, SUPERSTOX STAR DRIVER OF MANY YEARS AND SPEDEWORTH V8 2000 WORLD CHAMPION, 235 STU BLYTH AND ME, DEAN COX.

WE ALREADY HAVE CLASSIC HOT RODS AND HISTORIC STOCK SALOONS SO WE JUST WANTED TO HAVE SOMETHING FOR SUPERSTOX, SPEDEWORTH' S OLDEST AND ORIGINAL FORMULA.

WITH GRATEFUL THANKS TO SPEDEWORTH MOTORSPORTS DEANE AND JANET WOOD, WE HAVE BEEN ENTRUSTED WITH RESPECTING AND PRESERVING THE RICH HISTORY OF SPEDEWORTH SUPERSTOX AND THIS WEBSITE, TOGETHER WITH OUR POPULAR FACEBOOK PAGE, WILL BE THE ‘HUB’ OF ALL THINGS ‘OLD SKOOL SUPERSTOX’.  THE AIM IS TO REFLECT THE EARLY DECADES OF THE FORMULA, IN PARTICULAR THE DRIVERS AND CARS OF THE LATE SIXTIES, SEVENTIES, EIGHTIES AND EARLY NINETIES ERA’S.

WE AIM TO ARRANGE SOCIALS/GET TOGETHER'S, FILM NIGHTS AND ANYTHING RETRO SUPERSTOX RELATED. WE ARE EVEN RESEARCHING AND CATALOGING SOME ORIGINAL CARS STILL IN EXISTENCE OUT THERE AND THERE IS A GROWING LIST OF FAN’S WHO ARE RESTORING/RETRO BUILDING CARS TO THE ORIGINAL PERIOD SPECS FOR DISPLAY AND WHO KNOWS, MAYBE A DISPLAY TRUNDLE OR TWO AT ONE OF SPEDEWORTH' S PREMIER SUPERSTOX MEETINGS IF WE ARE PERMITTED.

BASICALLY WE STARTED WITH A BLANK CANVAS; THE MOVEMENT IS NOW ONE YEAR OLD AND HAS GROWN RAPIDLY AND ANY FURTHER IDEAS/INPUT WILL BE GRATEFULLY RECEIVED. AT PRESENT, WE ARE NOT A CLUB OR ORGANISATION, JUST A GROUP OF DEDICATED INDIVIDUALS WHO JUST LOVE OUR SUPERSTOX ‘OLD SKOOL’ SO IT ALL STARTS FROM HERE, - “CALLING ALL DRIVERS AND OFFICIALS IN THE STADIUM COMPLEX, IT’S JUST FIVE MINUTES TO START TIME”.
